Police in Gloucester City NJ arrested three men who allegedly robbed and assaulted someone on a city street.
The incident occurred late at night, a short time before 10:00 p.m. The victim, a 40-year-old local resident, was walking his dog on Brown Street and approaching the intersection with Monmouth Street when three men jumped him from behind.
One of the attackers was allegedly brandishing a handgun and pointed it at the back of the victim’s head. The three suspects then reportedly ordered the victim to hand over his wallet and cash. After the victim complied with their demands, the suspects allegedly punched and kicked the victim. Additionally, one of the suspects reportedly used the gun to pistol-whip the victim and knock him unconscious. The assailants then fled the area on foot.
A passerby saw the aftermath of the attack and dialed 911 to alert local law enforcement. The Gloucester City Police Department immediately dispatched police officers and paramedics to the area. Emergency medical responders treated the victim at the scene while Gloucester City patrol cops canvassed the area in search of the suspects. Police officers quickly located the suspects near the intersection of Nicholson Road and University Avenue and took two of them into custody without incident. However, one of the suspects made a run for it; he was eventually captured outside D&N Machine Co., a short distance away from the site of the assault.
A Gloucester City Police Department K-9 Unit assisted with the search and reportedly came across a starter pistol hidden underneath a dumpster behind a commercial building. Forensic examiners later determined that the gun may have been the weapon used during the armed robbery and assault.
The suspects are two 20-year-old men and a 22-year-old man. All three suspects are from Camden, New Jersey. They’ve been charged with numerous crimes, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and resisting arrest. Additionally, two of the suspects were charged with certain persons offenses for being convicted felons unlawfully in possession of a handgun.
According to Gloucester City police, the suspects have already admitted to committing the robbery and assault. If they plead guilty to the very serious criminal charges against them, the men could be sentenced to several years in state prison.
Shortly after being arrested and processed, the robbery suspects were remanded to the Camden County Jail in Camden, NJ. They were being held at the correctional facility in advance of a detention hearing. Depending on the outcome of that hearing, it’s possible that the suspects could be released on their own recognizances or be ordered held without bail until resolution of the criminal case.
