Imagine; if all divorcing parents could be kind to one another, even though they’re understandably scared, hurt and angry. Absent abuse and mental illness, all divorces should arguably be resolved by parents (with or without the professional guidance of attorneys, accountants and/or therapists) who care more about the children impacted by the divorce than they do themselves. Mediation is the “child-centered way” to divorce without fracturing a family; children learn and benefit from their parents’ recognition that it is way more important to be kind to one another than to “win” or to be “right” as to any particular issue. These emotional intelligent parents, with the help of caring and trained professionals, are able to provide their children with two loving homes rather than one broken home after the divorce. These parents also have the opportunity of continuing, and sometime even improving upon, one of the most important relationships in their lives; the relationship they once had and will hopefully continue to have with the person they once had a child with and whom they’ll hopefully be enjoying grandchildren with someday. It’s about empathy, forgiveness and gratitude; even when we’re scared, hurt and angry.
